The BCSF monitors Seismic France

Announcements:

Its inhabitants do not feel for most, but a dozen earthquakes a year but well received in France. It is up to the Central Seismological French (BCSF) to record, to identify and analyze, as we said Michel Cara, Institute of Earth Physics in Strasbourg.

The Central Seismological French (BCSF) collects all data on earthquakes in France. The most notable of them, it then broadcasts briefing notes and publish every three years, a final compilation of this information. In case of earthquake particularly important is that the BCSF consult the State to investigate the claims - made by the Commons - recognition of the state of natural disaster.

Two types of data are collected by this office. First, the macroseismic data: description of the effects felt on the inside or outside buildings, and for larger earthquakes, statement of damage to buildings. On the other hand, the instrumental data: Data from the seismic stations distributed on the mainland.

The first resulted in maps showing the values of the macroseismic intensity. The intensity decreases roughly as the distance from the epicenter of the tremors. Abnormalities, however, to meet, given, for example, a local amplification of vibrations. The second data, instrumental, for their part can quickly locate the epicenters of earthquakes with an accuracy of about 10 km and to measure their magnitude on the Richter scale.

The instrumental data on the metropolitan area come from the national seismic monitoring network (Renassance) and the Laboratory of Geophysical detection of Atomic Energy Commission. A total of 152 stations that are constantly scrutinizing our territory.
